I want to start by telling you some really great news that Nick and I got this week. Two of our very best friends who moved from Seattle to Steamboat Springs, Colorado about nine months ago have decided to move back to Seattle! They’ll be back in our neighborhood, living here, in two weeks! Brett was one of my first friends in Seattle. Brett and Kaelen are a couple we saw at least once a week when they lived here and we think about them daily. Honestly, this is one of the best pieces of news so far this year. They told me and Nick during a Skype call a few days ago:That’s the good news. Now let’s move to the historic and unprecedented moment I write you from.
Even after a chaotic, unpredictable, and disastrous first 60+ days in office for this Republican administration, there’s still something especially unnerving about this week in particular.
I’m not sure what type of United States you may be in by the time you read this, but I hope something has shifted for the better. At the moment I write this, I can only hope because everything seems to be shifting for the worse as I hear news this morning.
Here’s a quick rundown: The FBI and the House Intelligence Committee have both confirmed they are investigating if this Republican administration colluded with the Russians before and during the election. They are investigating if our current leaders were working with a foreign power to manipulate our systems. They are announcing this to the public and some leaders say they have evidence. This is a huge and unprecedented story. We’ve never seen anything like this in our country. Period. Never in our whole history. I hope you don’t ever have to experience it. It’s still unclear how all the dangers that are facing us will turn out.
At the same time, the Republican administration is trying to push its Supreme Court nominee through the confirmation process this week, even though they wouldn’t allow Obama to begin a confirmation hearing on his choice for the seat when he had more than a year left in office. Now, Republicans want to confirm their pick (which will impact this country for decades) when perhaps this administration has been (and perhaps still is) colluding with a foreign power? What the actual fuck?! I hope the Democrats obstruct the process.
At the same time, this Republican administration is trying to shove its healthcare bill through Congress, this is their attempt to repeal Obama’s Affordable Care Act. The current plan being pushed through by the White House would take away health insurance coverage for 24 million Americans who need it the most. If the new healthcare plan passes Congress, it will be a nightmare. I’m holding onto hope it won’t pass as even many Republicans have been opposed to it so far. The House’s vote on it could come today, if it passes there, it goes to the Senate. It will also face strong opposition there.
At the same time, there was a terror attack yesterday outside Parliament in London. A man stabbed a police officer to death and also ran over a crowd of folks on a bridge. As of my writing this, four people are dead with dozens injured.
At the same time, Trump continues to spew the most outrageous, easily provable lies through various ways, but mostly on Twitter.
Here’s how the news headlines have looked on my phone from the Washington Post:
